NEW ELECTIVES
December 15, 2021
During 2nd quarter at Centennial Junior High School, students took a survey on new electives they might want or be interested in. They were asked what foreign language, career, and fun classes they would like to have at school. The answers were interesting. In total 34 students were polled.
When students were asked about what foreign language class they would take, the answers varied. The top three choices were Japanese with seven votes, Chinese with six votes, and French with six votes. The other choices were ASL- four votes, German- four votes, Norwegian-one vote, Russian- one vote, Hawaiian- one vote, and “idk”- three votes. Overall nine languages were noted as students options.
When students were asked about what career class they would take, the answers varied. The top three choices were “idk”- with ten votes, financial- six votes, and cosmetology- five votes. The other votes were for art teachers – five votes, health workers- four votes, construction workers- two votes, teachers- two votes, business owners- two votes, and translator- one vote. Overall nine careers were picked by students.
When students were asked about what fun class they would take, the answers varied. The top three choices were crafty classes- seven votes, active/PE class- seven votes, and a free period to make-up work or hang around- five votes. The other choices were coding classes/computer skills- five votes, “idk”- four votes, music class- three, and debate class- three votes.
Based on the responses, many kids like the classes we already have, but others not so much. In my opinion having a different foreign languages than we already provide is a good suggestion because it can help kids connect to their past and ancestors. It would also be good if we had a different career class because I know there are kids who don’t know what they want to do with their lives. Another good suggestion I think we should have is a “free” class where we just catch up on work and socialize because sometimes we need a break and it isn’t good to be overworked all day.
