Should Centennial Have a Debate Club?

November 2, 2020
Centennial Junior High School has never had a debate club. If we had a debate club at Centennial many people would join it, especially eight graders. Eight graders at Centennial are very opinionated so if we had a debate club I think that many students would join. A debate team would be good because Eighth graders have very different opinions. With so many different opinions it would be so easy to have a debate on so many topics. You could debate about whatever you would like to debate about as long as it would be school appropriate. If we were to have a debate club we would have to have a good club teacher. You can not have a “Chris Wallace” moderator. You have to have someone who can understand both sides of the debate.
Samantha Pelton was interviewed for this and she said,”Yes because she thinks it is important to have students share their opinions with each other and try to convince others of their opinion because it forms life skills.”
The majority of the male students that are in the eighth grade at Centennial, have more conservative views, but the girls of the eighth grade have more liberal views. If we had an eighth grade debate club it would be a good idea because it gives both sides the opportunity to express their opinions in an appropriate place. This club is a good idea because it is a respectful place to express opinions and try and convince the other side of your opinions. The topics do not have to be political they can be anything. This club would be a good idea because it will help us form many good life skills that can give us better opportunities to get jobs and be successful in life because it is giving us the skills to public speaking and provide evidence so we can make our opinions more credible. A debate club could be the best thing that happens to this school because it gives the students a voice.
